Manar Abu Dhabi - Self Similar

After our desert adventure we went out for dinner at Mamsha, with Anna and Andrew (no photos taken, don't know why!) who'd come over from Doha for the weekend. On the way home, I decided to go rogue, and took everybody off the route home to stop in here, at Al Fahid island.

It was just before midnight, which was closing time for this temporary installation of - sand art. This is part of Manar Abu Dhabi, a current project with light installations in different forms all across the city.

This consists of 448 sand pyramids and mounds in different sizes, hand made and placed in concentric rings, forming an intricate sort of mandala pattern.

You are encouraged to immerse yourself into the artwork, and you can walk around amongst the smaller pyramids, and even climb the two biggest ones to get a panoramic view of the composition from the height of 27 m. It was truly beautiful to see the site in the night light like this, lit up by thousands of solar lanterns.

It is created by American land artist Jim Denevan, and it is his largest artwork to date covering almost a square kilometer.

We were told that the installation will be maintained until the end of December, then it will be left as is to be transformed by the wind, weather and time. It'll be interesting to see how it evolves.
