Kalmar & Kronan

On the second day the weather turned a bit dull and boring. It had rained all night and we weren't to sure if it was going to continue or not, so we decided that a trip across to Kalmar would be a good idea for the day. The camping was situated right next to the harbour so we were at walking distance to the ferry.

As we arrived in Kalmar, there was a big military ship just about to set off. Exciting!

We started with a visit to the Kalmar County Museum, and the exhibition about Kronan, the large Swedish Man-of-War (=Regalskepp) ship.

Kronan capsized, exploded and sank in a naval battle against the united Danish-Dutch fleet in 1676. It was later rediscovered in 1980, and diving operations have been going on every summer since then to salvage as much as possible from the wreck. So far more than 30,000 objects have been recovered.

When Kronan was built, she was so far as of now known one of the largest warships in the world. The number and weight of her cannon made her the most heavily armed warship that is known from her time.

There was a lot to see at the exhibition, models, illustrations, reconstructions and a large number of the objects recovered like clothing, coins, sculptures, cannons etc.

In another part of the museum they also displayed a temporary exhibition about the history of schooling in Sweden. Something especially Linnea and Anna found rather interesting.

After our visit to the Kalmar County Museum we aimed to also go visit Kalmar Castle. We only got about halfway there, then hunger struck and we had to regroup and find some food instead. Ah well, no biggie, there is always next time.

Guess the "hangriest" person in this photo..! :)

Kalmar is really beautiful. Lot's of people were out and about since it was Saturday, and we enjoyed our stroll through town.

Boys prepared for a little bit of fishing. Big Lukas' (yes, he has always been called Big Lukas. Both because he's five weeks older, but also because of his sheer size...) biggest passion in life is fishing, and it rubbed off a little bit on Lucas.

Dinner in the evening sun.

And after dinner it was time to try the fishing luck.
