Castello Sforzesco

After our morning city walking tour, and some lunch, we continued to explore. We were really lucky with the weather as there had several days of rain forecasted during our trip, but it kept being sunny, albeit very cold.

We walked passed the Castello Sforzesco, a medieval fortification built by the Duke of Milan, Francesco Sforza in the 15th century.

It was enlarged and renovated in the 16th and 17th centuries, becoming one of the largest citadels in Europe.

It has served many different purposes, medieval fortress, ducal residence, military citadel and today it houses several of the city's museums and art collections. We didn't visit any of the museums, we just wanted to wander around in the fort.

This castle, with its parks and courtyards, stands as a reminder that many of these great monuments are true palimpsests, layered with history, rebuilding, destruction, restoration, and reinvention.
